Fixing the VMWare “Windows could not find a driver for your network adapter” error

Seeing this error message in VMware can be more than annoying:

Particularly after you’ve installed, reinstalled, removed and reinstalled VMWare Tools and done… well almost everything else you’re told to do to fix it.

So then you come across this tip: See if your vmx file includes the following line of code and if it’s missing, add it.

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000e"

Say wha? Yeah I was lost on this suggestion when I came across it in the forums particularly after searching my computer for .vmx and coming up with nothing.

Ok – here’s the step by step of how to do that:

  1. Close/turn off your virtual machines (not suspended) if they are open but leave VMware open.
  2. Go to the “Virtual Machine Library” (shift+command+L)
  3. Right click (control+click) on the virtual machine you are having problems with and select “Show in Finder”
  4. Right click on that file and select “Show package contents”
  5. Find the file ending in .vmx and right click on it. Open With > Text Edit
  6. Now search for the following in the file:
  7. ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000e"

IF you have that line of code in your file then your problem is somewhere else. However if you don’t find this line of code in the file, you need to add it. Yes, just copy and paste it exactly as I have it above and add it to the file in Text Edit. Then Save > close and you should be able open your virtual machine in VMware and connect to the internet now.

It looks like it’s a fair number of people upgrading to Windows 8 in VMware from another older version of Windows (7, Vista, XP) may encounter this problem.

I accidentally blocked someone on Facebook and/or I’m not seeing posts from every group or person on my home page.

If you accidentally blocked someone:
Go to your Home page > scroll down to the bottom > click on “edit options” > find the persons name hit the x and there posts will be posted back on your news feed next time they post something.

If you are having trouble getting to the bottom of your page, use the keyboard shortcut to get to to the bottom of the page: PCs this is usually the “end” key or hold down “ctrl” and “end” at the same time. This varies a bit on laptops and macs.

If you are not seeing all of the posts for someone or for a fan page there are two possible reasons:

  1. You are seeing the “Top News” instead of “Most recent.” Even if you click “most recent” one day, the next day it might be back on “top news” and you’ll have to click it again.
  2. You have your account to show only the people you interact with the most. See the above screen shot and instructions for editing that

My facebook account is posting odd messages or I think it was hijacked – now what?

facebook acct compromised

facebook acct compromisedYour facebook account can be hijacked by a malicious application or going to a website that isn’t facebook and entering your password. If you have clicked on a link or added a facebook app you shouldn’t have, don’t panic yet!

I would recommend changing your password and following these instructions :
https://www.facebook.com/help/?page=1009

I would also suggest removing any facebook apps that you aren’t familiar with (or it’s a good time to clean house and remove apps you no longer use also if any.)

You can remove an application you have allowed from the Applications You Use page. To get to that page, follow these steps:
  1. Go to the Privacy Settings page from the “Account” drop-down menu located at the top of any page on Facebook.
  2. Click the “Edit your settings” link under the Applications and Websites section towards the bottom of the page.
  3. Click on the application you’d like to remove. If you don’t see the application listed, you can find it by clicking the Edit Settings button towards the top right-hand side of the page.
  4. You’ll then see an expanded view of your settings for that application. From here, you can click the “Remove application” link. Once you confirm you’d like to remove the application, it will no longer have access to your data and be removed from your profile, bookmarks, and your Applications and Games Dashboards.
